Cameraman Paul Schlindwein interview

I had the chance to get in touch with Jed Rothenberg, founder of LandingPadBA. LandingPadBA (LPBA) is an alternative city guide and online agency from Buenos Aires, Argentina. LPBA author Rex Racer did this interview and I’m publishing again here on Cameraman.com. The interview is about US cameraman Paul Schlindwein that moved to Buenos Aires, Argentina a few years ago.

What brought you to Buenos Aires?

Paul: The daily grind! I was working 22 days a month just to break even. It really began in England. We were pub crawling on a canal boat through the Midlands during a film festival when I was chatting with some friends.

We were talking about how if Bush was reelected in ’04 that I was going to leave the states. Well, he was reelected and I began to make plans to leave. I wanted to go someplace south of the equator, so when the fallout came I’d be far enough away. I needed an international airport with direct flights for work, so it was down to Sao Paolo, Lima and Buenos Aires. I hate Sao Paolo. It reminds me of Houston, TX, except in Brazil. Lima is a bit too dangerous. So here we are.

I had actually been here before, 30 years earlier, while my sister was studying here. I decided to make 4 trips to Buenos Aires before I made the big move. I networked, researched job opportunities and then liquidated everything I had in the states.

Behind the Scenes of VW’s Black Beetle Commercial

One of the standout spots from this year’s crop of Super Bowl commercials was undoubtedly Volkswagen’s Black Beetle which trailed the forthcoming launch of the new 21st Century VW Beetle. This Super Bowl stunner features an exquisitely animated, striped beetle that dodges natural foes in the woods with the prowess of a 21st Century VW Beetle in a heart-pounding car chase.

Alongside MJZ director Dante Ariola and agency Deutsch, The Mill London’s team of artists pulled out all the VFX stops to create the realistic CG beetle and its insect friends. Take a look at how they did it in this special Making Of fillm.

Would you like to see more?

Here you have a fascinating behind-the-scenes video that gives you an up-close and personal look at the making of the entomological, CGI wonderland of the Black Beetle. Tom Bussell and Juan Brockhaus, The Mill Lead 3D Artists on “Beetle”, say they created an animatic from Ariola’s storyboards to provide a blueprint for timings and how the edit would work. They researched not only iconic car chases, but watched documentaries and observed real-life footage of insects to make the spot’s cast as believable as possible.

“The 3rd Letter” directed by Grzegorz Jonkajtys

The 3rd Letter is a short movie directed by Polish visual FX artist Grzegorz ‘Greg’ Jonkajtys . Greg is known from the incredible post apocalyptic short The Ark which was an official selection selection at Cannes a few years back. The short movie was shot on a Canon 5D MarkII. Despite the issues they encountered with the 5D Mark II, Jonkajtys and Koch were pleased with the outcome.

I couldn’t be happier, to be honest,

said Cinematographer Bastiaan Koch.

In the end we got beautiful footage that looks very much like film out of a very inexpensive camera. We saved a lot of money and were able to shoot in locations that would’ve been off-limits to us if we were using cinema cameras.

HDSLRs like the 5D Mark II will open up new worlds of possibility for filmmakers,

said Cinematographer Bastiaan Koch.

I think cameras like the 5D Mark II are fantastic for independent filmmakers, it allows us to do things that previously only high-budget movie productions could do. We’ve already seen an explosion of films shot with HDSLRs, and we’ll see even more in the future. It’s really an exciting time for filmmakers.

Slow-Motion: Cinematographer David Torres’ stunning work

In this post I wanted to present a selection of short films produced by Mexican production company The Mates for the project “Stars of the Bicentennial” to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the founding of Mexico as a Country.

Cameraman and Cinematographer David Torres did an amazing job using the Phantom and Red One Camera with lenses Red Pro Primes.

The dream and the challenge is to transmit through images that can be perceived not only natural beauty and biodiversity, but the soul, spirit, feelings and pride of Mexico.

If you like horses watch the first video: The images are just spectacular!
